As he attended rave parties in the 1990s, he began to assimilate into that culture and fell in love with electronic music in the process. He dedicated time to studying electronic music and subsequently learned to DJ.

The mid-90s saw him become a temporary bass player for American death metal band Exhumed. He then began playing house parties under his DJ Lorin moniker. In 2001 he switched to the Bassnectar name and released his mixtape, Freakbeat for the Beatfreaks.

Bassnectar has performed at a variety of festivals including Coachella, the Electric Daisy Carnival, Lollapalooza, Wakarusa, Okeechobee Music & Arts Festival, Bonnaroo, Oregon Eclipse, Camp Bisco, and the Life is Beautiful Festival.

However, he stopped touring in favor of holding his own events which are quite popular among his fans, who are also referred to as bassheads. The decision to stop touring shouldn’t come as a surprise to many; touring is notoriously draining, and Bassnectar was no slouch in that department.

He is known for his high work-rate. He has released 14 studio albums, 18 mixtapes, 9 EPs, and plenty of singles as well as remixes. Bassnectar was known for spinning up to 7 times per night during the early stages of his career. Later in his career, he was known to play up to 150 nights per year.

He also owns a record label, Amorphous Music, through which he releases his music projects. He has collaborated with many high profile artists over the years, including Ellie Goulding, KRS-One, Lupe Fiasco, Perry Farrell, Diplo, Gogol Bordello and Rye Rye.

Despite having been in the music industry since the late 90s, his first album to enter the Billboard charts was his 2001 release, Divergent Spectrum. His highest charting album is 2014’s Noise vs. Noise, which peaked at the number 21 position.

Bassnectar draws influences from various genres such as rock and metal. He uses Ableton Live as his primary DAW. Before switching to Live, he used Propellerhead Reason as well as Steinberg Cubase as his DAWs.

He’s a macOS guy. He has a wide variety of software instruments. Some of these are Massive, Rob Papen SubBoomBass, Rob Papen Albino, Tone2 Gladiator, Native Instruments Absynth and u-he ACE.

Bassnectar has stated that he loves using the Bose QuietComfort 15 headphones when producing on the road.

Some of the hardware he uses on his live sets includes a Pioneer DJM-900 Nexus mixer, Pioneer CDJ-2000 Nexus and an Allen & Heath Xone 92 DJ mixer.

He has a collection of Avalon VT-737sp microphone preamps. He relies on a pair of Mackie HR824mk2 studio monitors for checking his mixes.
