Calvin Harris is one of the most recognizable names in modern electronic music due to the high profile collaborations he has had with the likes of Dizzee Rascal, Rihanna, Ne-Yo, Ellie Goulding, Big Sean, Gwen Stefani and many other music stars. He was born in Scotland and developed an interest electronic music as a teenager.
He released his first song in 2002 under the alias “Stouffer”. He was later signed the dance festival firm Global Gathering and then signed a management, recording and publishing deal with Sony BMG, Three Six Zero Group, and EMI respectively all of which was fueled by his popularity on Myspace. He released his debut album I Created Disco in 2007 which was a commercial success. He has released 5 studio albums to date.
Calvin Harris produces mostly nu-disco, electroclash, electro-house and other sub-genres of electronic dance music. He’s also known to feature elements of funk in some of his music. His most successful songs include Feel So Close, Summer, This Is What You Came For, We Found Love, Sweet Nothing and How Deep Is Your Love.
Calvin’s uses quite a lot of hardware in his production. He used to use an Amiga 1200 computer, a Korg M5 keyboard, Electrix Filter Queen and a Zoom 1201 effects box for production in his early days. He now uses Apple Logic Pro on his MacBook Pro. He plays several instruments including a custom Gibson SG guitar, MOOG Source synthesizer, Roland SH-201, Korg MS20 synthesizer and Korg microKorg synthesizer keyboard. His mixer of choice is a Pioneer DJ DJM-900NXS2 with accompanying Pioneer DJ CDJ-2000NXS2 decks for performance.
He’s also known to use several different headphones as such the Pioneer HDJ-2000, Sennheiser HD 25 and SOL Republic Master Tracks headphones. Other equipment he has used over the years include the Akai S950 sampler, the Alesis 3630 compressor, a Focusrite VoiceMaster Pro, and the AKG C1000 mic to mention a few. He also plays bass guitar.
