Porter Robinson is an American record producer and DJ. He started creating music at the age of 12 years old under the moniker of Ekowraith. His debut album Worlds was released under his real name in 2014 and received positive reviews due to its eclectic nature. He has produced music in a wide range of styles but his most prominent work has been in the synth-pop and electro-house subs-genres.
Porter’s music is heavily influenced by anime, video games and Japanese culture in general. In 2015 he releases a remixed version of Worlds which saw Porter’s music remixed by several producers such as Odesza, Mat Zo, and San Holo to name a few.
He has also released music under the alias of Virtual Self, which features more of a late 90s techno sound. His most successful singles include Easy, Lionhearted and a 2016 collaboration with Madeon titled Shelter whose anime music video garnered a large number of views on YouTube and critical acclaim for the creative and moving message it contains. He releases his music through Skrillex’s OWSLA record label as well as his own Virtual Self label.
Porter’s production setup is very minimalistic. He uses FL Studio as his DAW and most of his work is software-based as he believes hardware doesn’t add much to his production process. He was once the owner of a Roland JP-8000 synthesizer keyboard.
In his early days, he used a set of $100 Logitech multimedia speakers and later moved up a pair of KRK Rokit 6s and an M-Audio Fast Track audio interface. He also uses a Novation Launchpad, Livid OhmRGB, and Korg nanoKEY2 MIDI controller.
