Skrillex is one of the most easily recognizable faces in EDM, largely due to his distinct hairstyle. The American producer and DJ started out as the lead singer of a rock band called From First to Last. His pursuit of a solo career began in 2007 but success only began to rear its head in after releasing Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites EP in 2010 and More Monsters and Sprites EP in 2011. Those projects lead to 5 Grammy Award nominations at the 54th Grammy Awards, 3 of which he won that year.
He has been nominated for multiple awards (and won some) including 12 Grammy Awards, 6 MTV Video Music Awards, and a Kids Choice Award. His music has been used in various media including the Academy Award-nominated film Wreck-It Ralph.
Skrillex is most commonly known for his dubstep songs, though he has produced other sub-genres of EDM such as electro house and trap. He founded his own record label OWSLA alongside 3 colleagues in 2011 and has since worked with artists such as Dillon Francis, Porter Robinson, Zedd and What So Not.
His single Bangarang is his most successful to date. It has sold more than 3 million copies in the USA and has charted in multiple European countries and Australia.
A copy of Ableton Live is installed on his MacBook Pro and sits at the heart of his music production setup. He uses a wide variety of software plugins including Native Instruments Massive, Native Instruments FM8, Sylenth1, Ohm Force Ohmicide, Tone2 Gladiator, Sugar Bytes Wow, reFX Vanguard, Xfer Serum and a bunch of others. In the past, Skrillex used FL Studio and Reason for production.
On the hardware side, he uses a set of KRK Rokit 5 studio monitors as well as a pair of Barefoot MiniMain12 studio monitors. He also uses a Focusrite Saffire PRO 14 Audio Interface, Akai Professional MPK49 USB MIDI Keyboard, Native Instruments Maschine and an Akai Professional APC40 Ableton Performance Controller among his other pieces of gear.
