Review: MyMusix 1GB MP3 Player

MyMusix MP3 PlayerThe iPod nano may be Impossibly Small, but this little player costs less than half the cost of the cheapest Nano. I bought the My Musix MP3 Player about seven months ago. After dropping it several times and using every day on my hour long bike ride to work, it still plays perfectly. It is a player that comes with a 1GB Sandisk SD card. You can swap out the SD card for any other and it will run just fine. You can have four little cards and have as much memory on hand as the best iPod Nano if you want. When I bought this, 1GB Sandisk SD cards cost over a hundred bucks, so I essentially got this player for free with a 1GB card. Now, you can get a 1GB card for much cheaper, so it isn’t as great a deal as I got back then.

It is very simple to use in some respects and difficult in others. When you first buy it, you need to download the My Musix firmware update from their website. It was pretty essential to have the update because the software that comes installed doesn’t recognize music files in folders. When you play music, the songs are listed in their own strange little order. If you want to get to a specific song, scrolling is difficult. They have a new update that allows folder browsing. I haven’t used it yet, which would make this player much more useful. The cool thing is that you can put it on random and listen to songs for about 10 hours on just one AAA battery.

Helpful Tips:

  • Keep the cord that comes with your player. It looks like a normal USB cord, but it’s some weird proprietary thing, so don’t lose it.
  • Don’t try to put a clip on the back. If you attach it to the battery door, it will fall open. If you attach it to the secure side, it will hang funny. I just lock it and stick it between my gym shorts and undies. It hasn’t fallen out yet.
  • If there is a song that you want to listen to often, save it on the main directory instead of the folders. That will move it closer to the top and easier to access.
  • The display only scrolls through the song once, so if you want to know the name, check it as soon as the song comes on.
  • The displayed name is the file name, not the actual title of the song saved in the MP3. For best results, save your file names with the track number first (so they will play in order), then add the song title and artist. MusicMatch will easily rename all of your files for you in any way you want.
  • This player is a Radio Shack exclusive, so you can only purchase it through them: My Musix MP3 Player

On the whole, I have been really happy with this MP3 player. It’s so tiny, it fits into the palm of my relatively small female hand. The iPod beats it on usability, but for the price, this little thing is great!
